Background:
Physical fitness is a key part of the military lifestyle, yet hinders that stability when injuries occur. NMCPHC organizes, analyzes, and interprets the data from the United States Marine Corps (USMC) Sports Medicine Injury Prevention Program (SMIP). The primary goal of SMIP is to identify and treat musculoskeletal injuries as early in the injury process as possible to reduce the severity of the injury and likelihood of future injuries. Information is collected by Certified Athletic Trainers at each training site, who assesses the injury either on the field or at a rehabilitation center. Later, each injury report is entered into the SMIP database maintained by the Training and Education Command (TECOM).
Objectives:
- Provide timely descriptive reports for training sites
- Identify opportunities for interventions designed to prevent or reduce injuries associated with physical fitness training
- Track progress of interventions over time
Methodology Development:
Each injury recorded in the SMIP database is described based on the type of injury, event at the time of injury, location, time of reporting, training day within the training cycle, and severity and disposition of injury. Injuries are compared within the reporting cycle and over the calendar year. Injury rates can be calculated when appropriate denominator values are provided by the requesting party.
