Malaria is one of the most important infectious diseases in tropical and subtropical regions. Globally, malaria infects an estimated 500 million people annually and results in over 2 million deaths. Malaria remains a serious threat to US military personnel, particularly Navy and Marine Corps personnel deployed ashore and through malarious areas. Shipboard personnel are at risk when visiting ports with known malaria transmission.
