The Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center provides risk communication support for a wide range of issues and are the risk communication subject matter experts for the Navy and Marine Corps. All of the NMCPHC's risk communicators have scientific backgrounds in chemistry, biology, public health, and/or engineering. Because of NMCPHC’s organization, risk communicators work side-by-side with other public health professionals to provide timely issue-specific risk communication assistance.
Our experience at the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center has proven that incorporating risk communication strategies in the planning process for environmental projects will increase the likelihood of constructive public involvement. This involvement often leads to:
- Better overall risk management decisions, which are more likely to be supported by the public, legislatures, and regulators, and less likely to cause project delays
- Fewer lawsuits, punitive damages, and/or injunctions
- More favorable media attention and activist support
- Fewer Congressional inquiries
- Satisfying legal requirements of risk communication and public involvement.
All of the Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center's risk communicators have scientific backgrounds in chemistry, biology, public health, and/or engineering. The Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center is organized to allow the risk communicators to work side-by-side with toxicologists, risk assessors, epidemiologists, physicians, and industrial hygienists. This unique makeup enables us to provide timely topic-specific or issue-specific risk communication training and consultation using mainly in-house resources.
