Sailor in CHOW line

Why is nutrition important to military members and their families?

Just as high octane fuel is important for Navy jets, healthy eating is just as important for fueling the human body. To ensure optimal physical performance and health, Sailors and Marines must maintain a healthy body weight and body fat percentage, get the recommended amount of physical activity and exercise, and ensure their bodies receive the recommended nutrients they need. When Sailors, Marines, and their family members eat nutrient-dense foods in the form of whole grains, lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and low fat dairy products, it helps them to maintain their health and reduce their risk of developing disease.

Navy and Marine Corps Public Health Center (NMCPHC) Nutrition Program Goal

The NMCPHC Nutrition Program serves as a resource for the Department of the Navy and the entire Department of Defense (DoD) in promoting healthy eating. A primary focus of the program is to improve the nutrition environment within the DoD by supporting initiatives that improve the accessibility of nutrient dense foods. It also focuses on promoting the national public health messages and programs related to nutrition, specifically the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the use of the MyPyramid food guide.

Program Responsibilities:

  1. DoD, working in partnership with the DoD Nutrition Committee, with policy, programs, and nutrition initiatives.
  2. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) and Naval Personnel Command (NPC) with policy, programs, and resources related to nutrition.
  3. Naval Supply Command (NAVSUP), Navy Exchange Command (NEXCOM), Commander Naval Installation Command (CNIC), and the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) with nutrition initiatives and marketing healthy alternatives in military food venues.
  4. Navy and Marine Corps commands by providing technical assistance in assessing their nutrition environment, developing evidence-based nutrition resources and providing credible nutrition resources and information through classroom and online training opportunities, and on this website.
