ShipShape Instructor Training
Healthy Living

ShipShape instructors are needed to conduct a standardized 8-week program that offers information, motivation, guidance, and group support for service members and other beneficiaries to lose and maintain weight loss through healthy lifestyle modifications that rely on good nutrition and physical activity.

Qualifications:

Applicants for this training may possess academic training in nutrition. However, formal training is not a requirement as long as the applicant reviews basic nutrition information upon which the course is structured. Applicants can include various clinical healthcare providers, health educators, command fitness leaders, or even lay persons who possess basic nutrition knowledge. The training will highlight sources of nutrition information that are to be used to support course participants.

Applicants should also feel comfortable interacting with individuals and groups in the role of a counselor. The role of ShipShape instructors is not to lecture participants; rather, it is to provide essential information that participants need in order to make behavior changes, to offer suggestions and "brainstorm" with the group to identify weight-loss strategies they can tailor to their own circumstances, and to help participants by reinforcing success and overcomeing barriers. As such, a successful ShipShape instructor must be able to engage individuals in discussion within the group to explore lifestyle changes that will result in weight loss.

Note: Please be aware that individuals who complete this training will be expected to conduct group classes at least twice a year and complete all administrative responsibilities associated with conducting classes.

Training Sessions:

  1. Training will be conducted annually at the NMCPHC Conference in March. Information will be posted about the conference at a later date at Annual Public Health Conference
  2. Training will be conducted at the NMCPHC Health Promotion and Wellness Courses ShipShape Instructor Training will be provided for participants attending the entire week-long health promotion course as well as for participants who only wish to attend for the ShipShape training.
  3. Training can also be coordinated through your regional medical command in order to train multiple instructors for your region. This training can be conducted by NMCPHC in Portsmouth or at a site in your region.
