Comprehensive Industrial Hygiene Laboratory Program (CIHL)
Occupational Health

Mr. Leighton Turner is the CIHL program manager for the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery's two Industrial Hygiene Laboratories which are accredited by the American Industrial Hygiene Association.  The laboratories are located in Norfolk, VA and San Diego, CA.

These laboratories provide advanced analytical support to industrial Hygienists and occupational health professionals who support Navy and Marine Corps activities worldwide, as well as support to other Department of Defense activities.  The CIHL program staff includes 17 professional chemists and 2 laboratory technicians.

WORKLOAD:  The NAVMCPUBHLTHCEN tracks the workload for both laboratories on a monthly basis.  The total number of samples analyzed has increased over witha total of 34,212 samples analyzed in Fiscal Year 2008.

SAMPLE TURNAROUND TIMES:  The NAVMCPUBHLTHCEN tracks the turnaround times for both laboratories on a monthly basis.  Both CIHLs continue to exceed the goal of 90% of samples analyzed and reported within 12 days of sample receipt..

PROFICIENCY TESTING: Both CIHLs, as well as all Navy asbestos analysis laboratories are evaluated on a quarterly basis by the NAVMCPUBHLTHCEN and its contractors (i.e., Research Triangle Park and the American Industrial Hygiene Association).  Only laboratories found proficient in these testing programs are allowed to analyze asbestos samples.

Navy's Comprehensive Industrial Hygiene Laboratories (CIHLs)

The CIHLs participate quarterly in round robin testing with samples provided by both laboratories.  These samples are generally different from any samples provided by contractors and are usually chemicals unique to the Navy or military (e.g., Otto Fuel, JP5, etc.).
