The Industrial Hygiene Department provides comprehensive support to the Naval Sea Systems Command, in all areas pertaining to the review of materials contemplated for the construction/maintenance of nuclear powered submarines and deep submergence rescue vehicles.
Materials are identified for our evaluation by NAVSEA (SEA 05Z93). Off-gas testing of materials is performed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration/White Sands Test Facility, Las Cruces, NM under Navy contract.
Our Submarine Materials Review Board reviews materials, usage scenarios, and off-gas testing data, and issues reports via Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (M3F7) to SEA 05Z93.
Reports provide a recommended Submarine Material Usage Category and other health
hazard
control information. This information is placed on the Submarine Material Control List
(SMCL), available on
the Internet (password protected).
