Hepatitis Risk among Hazardous Waste and Sewage Workers
Occupational Health

Neither Hazardous Waste Workers and Emergency Responders (Matrix Program #711) nor Wastewater / Sewage Workers (Matrix Program #702) routinely need anything more than current DT immunization. Hep A and Hep B immunizations are not routine requirements of these programs. References are:

If a worker is assigned, such as firefighter or EMT, to routinely work around blood and infectious body fluids he/she may need to be placed in the Firefighter Program (#707), or the Health Care Worker Program (#719). In this situation the OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen (BBP) Standard 29 CFR 1910.1030 would apply and the individual would need Hep B vaccination.

There may be specific situations where certain groups need Hep A or Hep B immunization. (i.e. when there is a known risk for exposure and/or the worker falls under the guidelines of the BBP Standard). Conducting an adequate risk assessment should identify these individuals.
