Spirometry Equipment Specifications

Screening Spirometry for Occupational Medicine requires using the equipment, technique and procedures set forth by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The screening standards can be found in the OSHA Cotton Dust standard (29CFR 1910.43, Appendix D) and the most current American Thoracic Society (ATS) Standards (American thoracic society medical section of the American lung association standardization of spirometry, American Thoracic Society, Vol. 152, 1995 PP. 1107-1136).

These standards are taught in NIOSH-approved spirometry classes by course directors and instructors approved by NIOSH to provide the training. The Navy has two courses actively providing this training, one through the NAVENVIRHLTHCEN Occupational and Environmental Medicine Directorate and the other through the Naval Hospital Bremerton Washington Occupational Medicine Department. A NIOSH-approved course is required for all persons who administer the spirometry maneuvers as part of our Navy occupational and environmental health evaluations. Spirometry classes are scheduled and posted on the NAVENVIRHLTHCEN web site, . This web site also contains a registration form that can be printed and faxed to the course director scheduling the specific class of interest. In addition, the class is taught during the NEHC workshop.

ATS standards are routinely reviewed and updated making it necessary for all persons who administer the spirometry maneuver to also complete a refresher course at least once every three years. The Navy course directors may periodically offer this class and it is also taught during the NEHC workshop.

Spirometry courses and updates are available through private vendors and during professional conferences. These courses may not highlight specific Navy program requirements, but are acceptable substitutes for the Navy courses.

Navy standards for screening spirometry equipment are contained in the link above. These standards reflect requirements necessary for accurate and practical spirometry screening within the Navy community. These standards exceed OHSA/NIOSH standards to help ensure accurate and practical spirometers suitable for any Navy environment.
