NMCPHC manages the Naval Radioactive Material Permit (NRMP) program for medical facilities, serving as the Technical Support Center for the Naval Radiation Safety Committee. The Navy holds a Master Materials License issued by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to use radioactive materials for industrial and medical purposes. Individual commands are issued permits to use reactor byproduct material, accelerator produced material and naturally occurring radioactive materials. Not covered under the license are radioactive materials associated with naval nuclear propulsion or nuclear weapons program.
In support of the NRMP program, NMCPHC Radiation Health Team members review permit amendment and renewal requests for compliance with current regulations. We inspect most of our twenty (20) medical permittees every three years, including Naval hospitals using radioactive materials for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes as well as research facilities.
We interpret and distribute Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations and information bulletins for our permittees to keep them informed of the current requirements for the safe use of radioactive materials.
