The HMCM Stephen W. Brown Award
The HMCM Stephen W. Brown Preventive Medicine Technician of the Year Award, established in 1989, recognizes an individual Preventive Medicine Technician (PMT) for his or her sustained professional excellence and significant contributions to Navy and/or Marine Corps Preventive Medicine, Occupational Health, and/or Health Promotion Programs. This award is presented in memory of HMCM Stephen W. Brown, who served the Navy with distinction in many capacities from 1952-1986.
ELIGIBILITY: Each Commander, Commanding Officer or Officer in Charge may nominate one PMT (HM-8432) currently serving on active duty (afloat or ashore), in pay grades E-6 and below, who have served for the duration of the award period. Previous winners are eligible.
CRITERIA: Nominees must have significantly contributed to improve the readiness of operating forces or shore establishments, through their exceptional contributions in any area of preventive medicine, occupational health, and/or health promotion. Their contributions should include, but are not limited to:
- Significant achievements in the employment of Preventive Medicine, Occupational Health or Health Promotion programs at the activity level.
- Local program/process improvement of potential use Navy-wide.
- Creative management procedures that maximize use of equipment, personnel, or funds.
- Proven qualities that promote teamwork and demonstrate leadership among peers.
These contributions may be in one or more of the following specialty areas: communicable disease surveillance and control, field sanitation, food safety, habitability, hearing conservation, heat stress, and vector/pest control.
