How Does NMCPHC Help?
NMCPHC is working on a project with Commander Naval Installations to help maintain the integrity of the Federal Workers' Compensation program by having physicians review claims. The physicians may choose to write opinion letters that can be considered and that may have an effect on the decisions that the Office of Workers' Compensation at the Department of Labor make when they adjudicate the claim. The goal of the program is to provide Agency input into the process and thereby make sure that accepted claims for occupational illness and injury are valid.
To date, NMCPHC has provided opinions in 268 cases. Claims that our doctors have challenged for what we believe to be inappropriate diagnosis or not due to occupational factors have resulted in denials in many of the cases. In a 36 month span, the cases have amounted to over $44 million in cost avoidance for the Navy.
